A new stadium in Naples? This is Aurelio De Laurentiis' 70,000-seat project.

Aurelio De Laurentiis has announced plans to build a 70,000-seat stadium with 120 sky boxes for Napoli, as well as his intention to demolish the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

It is one of the most iconic stadiums in Italy, bearing the name of the legend who made it come alive: the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium is one of the major landmarks of Italian football.

A stadium that has become outdated and still features an athletics track, regularly at the centre of debates about renovation or demolition.

A key issue nowadays with Euro 2032 on the horizon, which will be held in Italy and Turkey.

Aurelio De Laurentiis wants to build a new stadium.

The president of SSC Napoli spoke to the Foreign Press Association in Italy during the presentation of an award recognising his career.

Aurelio De Laurentiis said he had found a plot of land east of Naples on which to build a privately owned 70,000-seat stadium.

The aim is to have a modern stadium that he owns, with 120 luxury boxes, restaurants, activities and an interactive museum.

He announced that he intends to finance it himself and that construction would take 24 months.

“The Maradona Stadium should be demolished.”

On the same occasion, Aurelio De Laurentiis said that the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium “should be demolished in order to build new housing for the city.”

The president of Napoli also has plans for a new training centre, for which he has also found a site.
