2 matches in 1 day: discovering the Veltins Arena and Borussia Park.

We set off for a groundhopping day with 2 matches on the same day in Germany: the Veltins Arena of Schalke 04 with a clash in the stands and the Borussia-Park of Borussia Mönchengladbach for a derby. Here's the story!

Last Saturday we headed to Germany for a groundhopping day with 2 matches on the agenda:

  • 1pm Schalke 04 - Dynamo Dresden, 2.Bundesliga
  • 6:30pm Borussia Mönchengladbach - Bayer Leverkusen, Bundesliga

Here's the story of our groundhopping day!

Schalke 04 - Dynamo Dresden: a clash in the stands.

First match of the day in Gelsenkirchen at 1pm. Schalke 04, current leaders of the 2.Bundesliga, were hosting Dynamo Dresden. This was the first time in 5 years that Dynamo Dresden had visited the Veltins Arena, so they were very much anticipated.

The Veltins Arena is incredibly impressive, nearly 60,000 capacity, a beautiful kop with plenty of flags, and a retractable roof. This was the third time we'd visited the Veltins Arena for a match and once again we weren't disappointed – it's one of the finest atmospheres in the country!

In the away end, over 6,000 Dresden supporters made the trip, a visually massive allocation, particularly striking in yellow, contrasting with the home colours in blue. In terms of atmosphere, Dresden lived up to their reputation: exceptional vocal power, plenty of choreography and incredible synchronisation throughout the entire end.

Though the Dynamo Dresden supporter associations arrived late and weren't settled until around the 15th minute, they started strong with their traditional chant "DY-NA-MO FORZA DYNAMO", an exceptional display of power that awakened all the local supporters.

A match that finished 2-2, with a brace from Edin Dzeko... and above all an absolutely amazing atmosphere in the stands. Don't miss the chance to experience a match at the Veltins Arena or to witness Dynamo Dresden supporters in their home end or away allocation!

Mönchengladbach - Leverkusen: a derby.

Barely had the first match finished when we headed to Mönchengladbach for the second match of the day. On the agenda was the derby between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen. A 65km trip for the Leverkusen supporters.

The Borussia-Park is a beautiful ground, in the black and green colours of the club, visually striking. In the stands the ground wasn't full and the away end didn't fill its tier.

In terms of atmosphere the home kop is nice to watch and very active throughout the match. It's not as powerful as Schalke 04 but it's still a really nice atmosphere to experience in the region!
