Volksparkstadion Hamburg

Volksparkstadion is also called "Hamburg Arena" for European Cup matches.

Formerly Bahrenfelder Stadion or Altonaer Stadion until its reconstruction in 1953. It was renovated for the 1974 World Cup and again in 1998/2000. It changed names very often before returning to its current name.

🏆 It hosted matches at the 1988 UEFA European Championship, the 2010 Europa League final and the 2006 World Cup quarter-final. Volksparkstadion hosted matches at EURO 2024.

There are several public transport lines allowing access to Hamburg's Volksparkstadion:

🚍  Bus 380 (Shuttle) "Arenen" station, 180

🚅 The S-Bahn serves Stellingen and Othmarschen stations connected to the stadium by shuttle buses 🚌 2 hours before the match. The stadium is a 15-minute walk from Stellingen and Eidelstedt stations.

Depending on your stadium entrance:

- Entrances A, B, E & F: S3 (direction Pinneberg) or S5 (direction Elbgaustraße). Exit at Stellingen (S-Bahn Station).

  Journey time 15 minutes + 20 minutes walk.

- Entrances C & D: S1 (direction Wedel). Exit at Othmarschen (S-Bahn station). From this station take a bus shuttle. Journey time 40 minutes + 5 minutes walk.

For the return to the city centre use Stellingen station. Waiting times at Eidelstedt station can be quite long.

 

How to get to Hamburg's Volksparkstadion?

🚗 by car

Traffic is heavy around the stadium on matchdays. It is not advisable to drive in the Hamburg region, the road network is very congested even in normal times. Allow extra time for potential traffic jams in the area.

If you come by car, there are 2 options:

Park near your accommodation and get to the stadium using public transport/local trains.
Park at a park and ride or in a nearby village and complete the journey by public transport/local trains.

🚲 By bike : a StadtRAD station is located at the corner of Sylversterallee and Schnackenburgallee. There is free bike parking at the stadium.

 

What are the other ways to get to VOLKSPARKSTADION in HAMBURG?

Several companies are available in Hamburg for travel other than public transport or car.

🚕 by TAXI

There is only one place near the stadium to be dropped off by taxi: Farnhornweg.

Taxi services available in Hamburg are Uber, Bolt and Freenow.

 

🛴 by Electric Scooter  

Various free-floating electric scooter rental companies (or e-bikes) are available in Hamburg: Bird, Bolt, Lime, Tier, Voi.

⚠️ Be careful about the parking zone upon arrival (large areas are off-limits for scooter parking).

 

How to travel to Hamburg?

✈️ by plane :  There is a major airport in Hamburg, "Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt (HAM)".

From France, there are direct flights to Hamburg from: Paris, Lyon, Nantes, Bordeaux and Nice.

🚇 The S-Bahn S1 line runs directly from the airport to the train station (located in the city centre). Journey time is 35 minutes. You can buy train tickets when you arrive at the airport.

There is another option: Land at Berlin airport. Allow 3 hours of travel (one metro to Berlin station then a direct 2-hour train journey to Hamburg).

 

🛏️ Accommodation Advice in HAMBURG or nearby

🚆 Germany has an extremely comprehensive rail network.

🌙 Several trains (local, regional or national) run in the evening/overnight.

Check train lines that run late evening/night to stay in a nearby city or village. You can use the park and ride map above to see which lines serve the outskirts of Hamburg.

We have created a map of all stations served in the late evening (after the match, trains departing around 00:30/1am/2am) from Hamburg station. At each station, you will find in the description the local/regional train lines stopping there.

Here are the steps to save on accommodation:

1️⃣ Find a nearby city or village to Hamburg

2️⃣ Look for cheaper hotels/accommodation in the area, close to one of these stations

3️⃣ Check on the Deutsche Bahn (DB) website your itinerary, if trains really run at night to your destination

4️⃣ Book your accommodation

IC, ICE (national trains like TGV) and night trains run at all hours, you can also find long-distance itineraries this way.

👀 What to do / what to see in Hamburg?
