"Maracana" is the name of a river that flows through Tijuca, passing through Sao Cristovao. It means "similar to a rattle" due to the noise made by birds.
This is Brazil's largest stadium.
Despite its inauguration in 1950, the stadium's construction was not completed until 1965. This legendary stadium has hosted many major events such as the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
The greatest players such as Pelé, Eusébio, Maradona, Beckenbauer, Zico and Messi have played at the Maracana stadium. Site of Pelé's 1000th goal during his career in 1969.
The Walk of Fame was inaugurated in 2000 on the occasion of the stadium's 50th anniversary. (hand or feet casts of Stars)
